| Dick Spotswood: College's IVC progress raises questions
ODDS & ENDS: Ignored on Super Tuesday was Ralph "there's no difference between George Bush and Al Gore" Nader's selection as the presidential nominee of both the left-leaning Green and the Peace and Freedom parties. In Marin, 492 voters marked their ballots for Nader, mostly under the Green Party banner. This means Ralph Nader will be on November's presidential ballot. THIS YEAR'S congressional election in the Marin-Sonoma Sixth District should be cut and dry. Incumbent Democrat Lynn Woolsey will run for reelection and win a ninth term, but she will have opposition. At least one Republican will make a race of it. Mike Halliwell, Republican of Cotati, has thrown his hat into the ring. The retired Long Beach State University educator is a self-described member of the moderate "Peter Behr-Bill Filante Brand of Republicanism." Two years ago, Halliwell gave the same North Bay race a shot but lost in a rare contested GOP primary.
FIFTH ONE-DAY INTERNATIONAL, Christchurch:
Have any of you stayed up through the night for all five ODIs? If so, you really are "hardcore". We'll be back in action for the first Test in Hamilton, which starts on 5 March (UK time, that's 2130 GMT the night before, on 4 March). Ben Dirs and Sam Lyon will be sharing the live text duty for the first Test - and if your appetite for the Dirs needs whetting, he and Tom Fordyce are in Paris today for the France-England rugby game, so look out for their despatches from there. .
Are Designers The Enemy Of Design?
Does a great movie on global warming but does he walk the talk with a 20-room mansion and private jets? What is his real carbon footprint? Yes, he buys all kinds of carbon offsets, you know pay peasants in the Amazon to grow trees. But is that living a sustainable life. Can you buy your way to a carbon-free life there if you are rich? Both Davos and the Oscars were full of rich folks flying in on private jets leaving a big fat carbon footprint. Yet both conferences were allegedly CARBON-FREE. What's up with that? OK, enough. Now that I've insulted designers, allow me to insult myself. In the 90's, I was the editorial page editor of Business Week. I was the VOICE OF AUTHORITY. Truly, they had an ad campaign revolving around the voice of authority. I did design as a journalistic afterthought, at nights or the weekend.
Bridal Affaire draws crowds to Gallatin Mall
It was matrimonial merriment, only in miniature. ERIK PETERSEN/CHRONICLE A fashion-show model displays a tuxedo with flair to the crowd attending the Bridal Affaire at the Gallatin Valley Mall Saturday afternoon. Caterers doled out tiny cupcakes and small sample portions of roast beef to brides- and grooms-to-be in an empty storefront decorated for a wedding reception at the Gallatin Valley Mall Saturday.A life-size Irish band played soothing tunes from one corner of the small pseudo-reception hall. The runway for a bridal fashion show was set up in the back half of the room.Debbie Flikkema and Leanne Moss, of Churchill, came to the Bridal Affaire 2008 "to get ideas" for their daughters, both of whom are getting married soon and live in other states. Many others were there for similar reasons, and they strolled through the mall in search of ideas for cakes, flowers, food, decorating, gowns and tuxedos.
The Wrong Version of Nick Lowe's Debut Album Is Being Reissued
For better or worse, English song-o-matic dispenser Nick Lowe's debut solo album was deemed worthy of two versions. The British one, Jesus of Cool, came out on Radar, the label founded by Jake Riviera after he split from Stiff, wherein Lowe, a punk and postpunk godfather, had earned the handle "Basher" for his in-three-takes-or-less approach as house producer for Graham Parker, the Damned, and Elvis Costello. The American version, retitled Pure Pop for Now People, was released by Columbia. Both came out in March of '78, and both include basically the same songs. Still, Pure Pop is better than Jesus—the rub is in the track listing—but it's Jesus that's getting a 30th-anniversary reissue. It all starts at the beginning: Album openers are paramount in setting the tone. Jesus went with "Music for Money," a robotic new wave number that has Lowe wryly indicting the record biz: "Gibsons for gain/Reddies for roadies/Fenders for fame." Meantime, Pure Pop revs up with "So It Goes," an exemplar of the album title, with triumphant drums, a snappy refrain, and a curious narrative about Russians, a "snaky" Persian, and a kid who cuts off his right arm "in a fit to save a bit of power." Its title quite obviously apes Kurt Vonnegut's shit-happens mantra from Slaughterhouse-Five; regardless, it's a more telling preamble to the grab bag of expertly crafted three-minute ditties that Lowe convenes here.
Chris Rock's campaign
There was no question that this is an election season as Chris Rock hit Philadelphia on Tuesday night for the first of three performances at the Academy of Music. He opened the show with his own comedy caucus, detailing the abundant lies that are part and parcel of the process. Then he tore into each of the candidates in turn. McCain: "How you gonna make decisions about the future if you ain't gonna be here?" Clinton: "I think America is ready for a woman president, but does it have to be that woman?" Obama: "He doesn't let his blackness sneak up on you. You hear 'Barack Obama' you expect one of the Commodores to come through." And lest you were worrying, Rock had plenty of ammunition left over for our sitting president.
