| As Berean Academy faces yet more tragedy it teaches us about hope
Whether you are a praying person or not, keeping the Berean Academy community in your thoughts is important during this second term of the 2007-08 school year. The school again has been faced with the kind of adversity schools would rather not face. Once again, the school is dealing with the death of students. It’s coming on the heels of another community loss and, God willing, bringing to an end a set of challenges dating back to May. Throughout the last year, the school has been teaching that being a Christian doesn’t automatically mean nothing bad will happen. But being a Christian can provide the inner strength to deal with tragedy when it strikes. Nowhere is that more apparent than Berean Academy in Elbing. The Christian school has seen tragedy during the last year and displayed the inner strength needed to deal with it as it comes.

Are you a sexual pervert? That's because your parents spanked you while you were a child. These are the results of four studies and a meta-analysis presented at the American Psychological Association's Summit on Violence and Abuse in Relationships. "Something experienced by many American kids gets an average .
O.J. Simpson's Girlfriend Hospitalized With 'Severe Head Injury'
Simpson's girlfriend Christie Prody was hospitalized in Miami Monday for what police are calling a "severe head injury," "Entertainment Tonight" reported. Prody suffered bruises and head injuries -- but it was because of a fall, and it had nothing to do with Simpson, Miami police told TMZ.com. The National Enquirer reported that Simpson was being investigated after Prody was taken to the hospital. But cops told TMZ that her injuries are "consistent" with a fall she took at a gas station, that they don't consider this a criminal case and that Simpson was never a suspect. An anonymous caller reported a woman falling and was taken by Fire Rescue to Baptist Hospital of Miami with a severe head injury, according to a police report obtained by "Entertainment Tonight." Prody had been "intoxicated and always falling down" during a trip this month to San Antonio, a witness told police, according to the report.
'Kids bombarded by unsuitable web ads'
A report looking at 40 websites popular with children has found that users were exposed to more than 200 ads, with many commercial messages promoting products unsuitable for children, such as gambling and dating. The study, called Fair Game?, assessed commercial activity on children's favourite websites, including Cartoon Network, CBeebies, Neopets, YouTube, Bebo, MySpace, eBay and Lime Wire. eBay: one of the sites most popular with children. Photograph: Linda Nylind Across 40 sites, the report found that when looking at just the homepage and one additional web page a total of 211 online ads were displayed. Because many of the websites popular with children are actually targeted at older groups - including many social networking and gaming websites - some of the ads were found to be unsuitable for young web surfers.
Shroud of secrecy
The report, which caused a minor meltdown among Alabama fans, was wrong. Jones wasn't sent home early, and he wasn't pitching the Sooners. Watson bumped into Florida co-defensive coordinator Charlie Strong last week at a coaches' conference, and Watson said Strong was equally upset at the report. Eyewitnesses have provided news of Jones' whereabouts. He was spotted at the Florida-Kentucky basketball game in Gainesville on Jan. 19. Sunday, he was spotted at the Oklahoma-Georgia women's basketball game, confirming an official visit to Norman, Okla. That means Jones has visited Alabama (Dec. 7), Florida State (Jan. 9), Florida and Oklahoma. That leaves one more weekend before national signing day to take one more visit. So where is Jones headed? Nowhere, Watson said. Jones has narrowed his choice to four finalists.
Stronger dollar tests US88c
THE dollar was stronger at noon, touching $US0.8800, as surprisingly strong private sector credit data and weak US new home sales numbers gave the currency a boost. During the morning session, the domestic currency traded between a low of $US0.8733 and a high of $US0.8800. The local unit shot up from $US0.8785 to $US0.8800 16 minutes after the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) revealed at 11.30am AEDT that total credit to the private sector, from financial intermediaries, climbed by 1.7 per cent in November. Over the year to November, total credit rose by 16.2 per cent. Lending to the business sector went up by 2.9 per cent in November.
TONAWANDAS: County needs more doctors
In years past, doctors were willing to be on-call every night to build patient volume, but many new doctors aren't willing to adapt to that kind of lifestyle, Owens said."When we're recruiting for positions, many say they want to work in an office space," Owens said. "They want to work Monday through Friday, nine to five and don't want to round at the hospital. Typically, that kind of nine to five position worked at the hospital and rounded on weekends, but it's a different environment than it used to be."Olivia Smith-Blackwell, MD, started her practice in North Tonawanda six years ago and said her patient list has grown rapidly. Even so, starting a private practice is just as much about juggling the overhead as it is about good medicine, she said."I think it's challenging no matter where you set up," Smith-Blackwell said.
Vatican Upholds Decision to Close St. Adalbert's
Dwindling numbers of church goers, and a shortage of available priests left no other choice, according to the Diocese. But some members of the parish appealed to the Vatican to intercede, citing among other things the popularly held belief that St. Adalbert's was the first Roman Catholic Church in the United States to receive basilica status. (in 1907) Whether they plan to continue their challenge after this latest setback remains unclear. .
John Mayer's Supreme and Sweaty Workout
John Mayer worked up quite a sweat at his Santa Monica gym on Tuesday afternoon before Sushi dinner at Katsuya. We know he's quite the fitness buff (emphasis on the buff — heeellooo), but has been without a female workout partner over the last few months. Since I'm sure that's something he wants from the highly desired future Mrs. Mayer, may I suggest that he sticks with his rumored flame Cameron Diaz. She seems to have the sense of humor to go with the physical fitness, which has to be a plus. .
President Bush Declares March Red Cross Month
In a tradition dating back to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, President George W. Bush declared March as Red Cross Month, calling it a time to "honor this charitable organization" and "reflect on its remarkable achievements and contributions to our country." In a Proclamation signed today, the President cited examples of how the Red Cross had provided food, comfort and medical assistance to the victims of a number of disasters in 2007, from the tragic bridge collapse in Minnesota to the devastating wildfires in California. He also noted how the Red Cross provides vital assistance by organizing blood drives, teaching health and safety programs, and supporting our men and women in uniform. Throughout the month, 750 Red Cross chapters across the country will celebrate in a variety of ways, including holding special events, trainings or fundraisers to give people an opportunity to support the organization through donations of time, money or blood.
