NFL hesitant to reinstate Pacman

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell indicated Friday that Adam “Pacman" Jones' suspension might not be lifted when it is reviewed sometime after the Pro Bowl.Goodell, speaking at his annual press conference at the Super Bowl in Glendale, Ariz., was asked about Jones' year-long suspension meted out last April.Goodell said his original message to Jones with the suspension was for him to change his behavior, which, Goodell said, reflected poorly on the entire National Football League.“If he needs more time to get that message, I can accommodate him," Goodell told a media gathering Friday.Jones had two misdemeanor charges dropped Thursday in Rutherford County, but still has an unresolved issue pending in Georgia from a 2006 incident. He pleaded no contest to a gross misdemeanor of conspiracy to commit disorderly conduct in Las Vegas last December, after originally being charged with two counts of felony coercion in a strip club fight last Feb.

Silverchair enjoys a silver lining

IT WAS the year of the 'chair. Having scooped the ARIA Awards, co-headlined the biggest Australian arena tour of the year and scored a No. 1 album, Silverchair has capped off its resurgence by earning the most played song on Australian radio.

The band's comeback single Straight Lines was the most spun track on Australian commercial radio in 2007. It nudged out the American band the Fray's How To Save A Life, and Gwen Stefani's The Sweet Escape.

Yet Silverchair's triumph masked a drop in commercial radio's support of local artists. Besides the Newcastle trio, only one other Australian act, Thirsty Merc, landed in the top 10. (Kiwi trio Evermore rounded out the top 10). In fact, after Thirsty Merc's 20 Good Reasons, at No. 4, the next best Australian effort was Missy Higgins' Steer, all the way down at number 21.

Sex, Romance Fades At JDate As World Of Jewish Fine Tunes Dating

Jerusalem ----August 17 ....... Talk about sex appeal, then talk about the World of Jewish. Talk about boredom and tired formulas, then talk JDate. There was a time when Jewish singles looking for a match through the Internet went straight to JDate, the largest Internet based Jewish dating service. The idea was simple, fill in a short questionnaire based on your dating preferences and the JDate search engine would return a listing of all those of the opposite sex that answer to your criteria. If you saw someone in the listing, you paid JDate a good sum of money to be in touch by email with your potential match. For a yearly fee approaching a couple of hundred dollars, you could search JDate's listings and be in touch with whomever you desired. Now, when you think of it, a couple of hundred of dollars a year may not sound like so much, especially with this virtual smorgasbord of potential Jewish dating mates at your fingertips.

In Newsweek, Bush Aide Says GOP Suffers from 'Bolshevik Fervor'

If were picking which conservative could represent us in Newsweek, conservatives would now find it hard to say "I guess I could live with Michael Gerson." These same Republican voters that are now being muddied with comparison to the Bolsheviks for their obsession with "purity" voted easily for Gerson's man George W. Bush in the last two elections, despite his lack of such purity. At the very least, Gerson might have the manners not to dismiss the voters who gave him his cozy place of profit and prominence as a bunch of bloody-minded Soviet commissars.

Surely, liberal Newsweek editor Jon Meacham loved every word of this piece, especially the claim that major GOP donors are thinking of going Obama.

You could easily argue that voters who prize ideological perfection to other qualities that might make a Republican candidate electable – charm, rhetorical fluency, an ability to build trust – could be making a mistake.

Yuks are scarce once trailers end

Steve Zahn had a good 2007 — he came this close to an Oscar nomination for Rescue Dawn — but the new year finds him working as a second-tier Owen Wilson. His character, Pete, the son of a late, beloved wildlife-show host, is running dad's program into cancellation with the mismanagement of soundman-partner Fred (Allen Covert) and crew members Cooker (Jonah Hill) and Danny (Peter Dante).

The problem is that they don't know the first thing about animals and they're too stoned to find out. A tip to the whereabouts of Bigfoot sends them to Ecuador (played by what appears to be locations in greater Los Angeles) along with a perky travel agent (Ashley Scott), a burned-out cameraman (Justin Long), and an alcoholic animal handler (Kevin Heffernan).

The movie's an almost painless frat boys' night out, and the target audience will recognize the cast from other, better dude-comedies.

Happily ever after

Yesterday, as she and David Pelletier, the world champion and Olympic gold-medal winning pairs team out of Edmonton's Royal Glenora Club were inducted into the Canadian Figure Skating Hall of Fame, she finally got it.

"I guess you just have to be in the moment," Sale said as she and her partner/husband left the Pacific Coliseum ice surface after an emotional ceremony filled with tears and laughter in what was both an absolute love-in and love story.

"It's so powerful," she said.

"All the focus is on you. What people are saying about you is so personal and means so much.

"It's impossible not to cry. Before I even came out I was crying," she said.

After watching an exceptionally well done video of highlights and tributes, Pelletier had tears in his eyes and rolling down his cheeks.

He said he was talking to a friend while the plane was preparing for take-off and the cabin crew were giving the safety demonstration.

Trump has made us look like a nation of parochial bumblers

OH NO. Do I have to? I suppose that there's no way to avoid writing about Donald Trump this weekend, now that Alex Salmond's dealings with the hirsute property tycoon have landed him - we are told - in the nationalist government's first "sleaze scandal".

Hmm. Even given the elastic nature of that term, I think it is stretching it to suggest corruption here. Favouritism, perhaps. Indecent haste, maybe. But improper behaviour? I don't think so. The affair does, however, betray a certain naivety on the part of the SNP and a want of good taste in leaping to the defence of a rather tacky real estate development as if it were a national treasure.

Trump is a big mouth and a bully - just look at his books and TV show. He is drunk on his own vanity and his own dubious charisma.
